Full Description
Explore one of the most striking attractions of Rome on this 2-hour tour! Castel Sant’Angelo was originally built as a mausoleum for the Roman Emperor Hadrian and his family in the 2nd century AD and later transformed into a Castle in the 14th century.
Throughout its existence the fortress was used as a Popes private residence, as a prison, as a place for public executions and as the State Treasury. During this visit you will learn how the Castle changed over the centuries and enjoy the fascinating stories about its rich historical past with mix of facts, legends and little-known curiosities.
Your expert guide with art history background will walk you through the museum’s rooms, showing you the most important pieces, as well as hidden gems. You will see the magnificent collection of artworks, including sculptures by Bernini, Raggi and Morelli, the emperor’s burial place, the courtyard of executions, the treasury room and much more. You will walk in the footsteps of former Popes as you visit the Papal apartments and hear the historical facts about the mysterious Passetto di Borgo, used by Popes to take refuge in the Castle at times of peril.
At the end of the tour you will also step out onto the Castle's terrace to enjoy a breathtaking view of Rome.
